Physical science in kindergarten through second grade is about how things move, make sound, and light up — pushes and pulls, rolling and sliding, magnets sticking, shadows growing, and vibrations you can feel on a drum. Because Matter & Materials is covered separately, these sessions stay on forces, motion, light, sound, heat, and simple energy. Evelyn Tutor talks with your child out loud, asks them to predict what will happen before it happens, and has them explain the reason afterwards using everyday words like faster, harder, farther, and blocked.

- Naming pushes and pulls in everyday actions (opening a door, kicking a ball, pulling a wagon) and telling which direction the force goes
- Predicting how a harder push or a heavier object changes how fast or how far something moves, and testing the guess
- Describing what makes an object start, stop, speed up, or change direction, including ramps, rolling, and sliding
- Exploring magnets: which objects stick, push-apart versus pull-together, and that magnets can work through paper or across a small gap
- Connecting sound to vibration — feeling a throat hum, seeing rice jump on a drum — and describing loud/quiet and high/low
- Investigating light and shadows: what makes a shadow, how it changes when the object or light moves, and which materials let light through
Where learners get stuck
- Thinking heavier things always fall faster, or that a bigger object always rolls farther
- Children generalise from experiences where air resistance or friction really did matter (a feather versus a rock), then apply that rule everywhere. Guided comparisons where only one thing changes at a time help separate weight from surface and shape.
- Believing something has to be touching an object to move it, so magnets and shadows feel like magic
- At this age 'force' means hands-on contact. Magnetic attraction through a gap, or a shadow appearing where nothing was placed, breaks that rule. Repeated small tests — moving a paperclip with a magnet under the table — build a new expectation before the vocabulary arrives.
- Saying a moving object stops 'because it ran out of push' rather than because something slowed it down
- Everything a child pushes does eventually stop, so 'the push wears off' matches observation perfectly. Comparing a ball on carpet, on wood, and on ice shifts attention to the surface as the cause.
What a session looks like
A session runs 15-25 minutes by voice. Evelyn usually starts with something the child did that day — riding a scooter, closing a lid, hearing a siren — and asks what pushed or pulled. Then comes a prediction question ('if I roll this down a steeper ramp, what changes?'), the child's answer, and a follow-up asking why they think so. Many sessions suggest a two-minute try-it with household objects: a magnet on the fridge, a torch and a wall, a rubber band stretched over a cup. Evelyn asks the child to report what happened in their own words rather than supplying the answer, and repeats vocabulary like push, pull, vibrate, shadow, and force across sessions.

- Able to hold a spoken back-and-forth conversation and answer 'why do you think so?'
- Comfortable counting and comparing amounts informally (more, less, farther, faster)
- No reading or writing required; an adult nearby for any hands-on try-it with small objects
Questions
- What does physical science mean for a kindergartener?
- At this age it means forces and energy you can observe directly: pushes and pulls, how things roll or slide, magnets, sound as vibration, and light and shadows. It is observation and explanation, not formulas or measurement.
- How is this different from the Matter & Materials topic?
- Matter & Materials looks at what things are made of — solids, liquids, hard, soft, melting. Physical Science here looks at what things do — how they move, make sound, or cast shadows — and what causes those changes.
- Does my child need science equipment or a kit?
- No. The optional hands-on suggestions use household items: a fridge magnet, a paperclip, a torch or phone light, a ball, a cardboard ramp, a rubber band. Sessions work fine as conversation alone.
- My child says everything falls because it is heavy. Is that a problem?
- It is one of the most common ideas at this age and it is not a sign of confusion. Evelyn works on it by setting up side-by-side comparisons where only one variable changes, and by asking the child to predict first so the surprise does the teaching.
