In these sessions a K-2 learner talks through what things are made of and how materials behave. They sort objects as solid, liquid, or gas, describe properties like hard, bendy, rough, clear, or magnetic, watch what happens when ice melts or water freezes, and explain why a raincoat is made of plastic and not paper. The tutor asks the child to look at real objects around them and put what they notice into words, which is where most of the science learning happens at this age.

- Sorting everyday objects into solid, liquid, and gas, and giving a reason for each choice
- Describing materials with property words: hard, soft, bendy, stretchy, rough, smooth, see-through, waterproof, magnetic
- Testing and comparing materials to decide which one suits a job, such as a cup, an umbrella, or a window
- Observing that heating and cooling can change water between ice, liquid, and steam, and that many of these changes can go backwards
- Noticing that a liquid takes the shape of its container while a solid keeps its own shape
- Using measure-and-compare language: heavier, lighter, holds more, holds less
Where learners get stuck
- Thinking that anything you can pour, like sand, sugar, or rice, is a liquid
- Small solid grains flow and take the shape of a bowl, so the pouring test looks convincing. Children need to zoom in on one grain and see that it keeps its own shape.
- Believing air is not really anything because you cannot see it
- At this age 'real' means visible and touchable. Squeezing a sealed bag, blowing up a balloon, or feeling wind gives evidence that a gas takes up space and can push.
- Confusing the material with the object, saying a spoon is made of 'spoon' or that plastic and metal are shapes rather than stuff
- Young children name what they see first. Sessions repeatedly separate the two questions: what is it, and what is it made of, using objects that come in several materials.
- Thinking melted ice is gone or has turned into something new
- The ice cube disappears from view as a puddle spreads out. Freezing water back into ice in a session task shows the change can be reversed.
What a session looks like
A session runs about 15-20 minutes of spoken back-and-forth. The tutor names an object the child can see or fetch, asks what it is made of and why it was made that way, then poses a sorting or predicting question. The child answers out loud; the tutor follows up on the reasoning rather than just the label, and sometimes suggests a quick check with a cup of water, an ice cube, or a magnet.

Questions
- What should my child know about states of matter by the end of second grade?
- Most K-2 programmes expect a child to sort objects as solid or liquid, know that air is a gas that takes up space, describe materials by their properties, and say that heating and cooling can change water between ice and liquid.
- Do we need materials or experiments at home?
- No setup is required. If a cup of water, an ice cube, a magnet, or a few household objects are within reach, the tutor will use them, but every task also works as a spoken thought experiment.
- Is this the same as the Physical Science topic?
- No. Physical Science at this level deals with pushes, pulls, motion, light, and sound. This topic stays on what things are made of, how materials behave, and solids, liquids, and gases.
- My child says sand is a liquid. Is that normal?
- Yes, it is one of the most common ideas at this age because sand pours. The sessions handle it by looking at a single grain and asking whether that one piece changes shape in a bowl.
