This topic asks a K-2 question that sounds simple but isn't: what makes something alive? Children sort objects into living, once-living, and never-living, learn the things all living things need (food or their own food-making, water, air, space to grow), name plant parts and what each one does, and follow life cycles from seed to plant and egg to adult. It sits alongside Animals & Habitats but stays on the biology of being alive rather than where creatures live, and it gives plants as much attention as animals.

  • Sorting living, once-living, and never-living things and giving a reason for the sort (a wooden chair, a seed, a rock)

Where learners get stuck

Thinking that anything that moves is alive, so a car, a river, or the wind counts as living
Movement is the most visible clue a five-year-old has. Until they hold several criteria at once (grows, needs food, has young), motion does all the work, which also makes them doubt that a still tree or a seed is alive.
Believing plants are not really alive, or that plants 'eat' soil the way animals eat food
Plants don't move, make noise, or visibly consume anything. Adults often say plants are 'fed' with water and soil, which reinforces the idea of eating rather than making food using sunlight.
Assuming a seed is a non-living object because it looks like a pebble
Seeds show no sign of life until they germinate. Children judge by appearance, and a dry bean genuinely resembles a stone until it is planted and watched over days.

What a session looks like

A session is a spoken back-and-forth. Evelyn might start by naming three things around the child's home and asking which are alive and how they can tell, then push on the reason rather than the answer. The child may be asked to describe a plant they can see, walk through what a sunflower seed does over a week, or put butterfly stages in order out loud. Evelyn asks for predictions ('what if we put the plant in a dark closet?') and short explanations, and re-asks a question in a new way when an answer is guessed rather than reasoned.

Questions

What should a kindergartener know about living and non-living things?
By the end of kindergarten most children can sort familiar objects into living and non-living and say that living things need food, water, and air. By second grade they should add that living things grow, change, and produce young that resemble them, and be able to apply this to plants as well as animals.
How do I explain to my child that plants are alive?
Anchor it in change over time rather than movement. Grow a bean in a wet paper towel and let them check it daily; a child who has watched a seed swell, split, and send out a root has evidence that talking cannot supply. Sessions build on whatever the child has actually seen at home.
Is this the same as the animals and habitats topic?
No. Habitats covers where animals live and how they fit their surroundings. This topic covers what makes something alive at all, what living things need, plant parts, and life cycles, with plants featuring heavily.
Does my child need to read to do these sessions?
No. The sessions are spoken, so a child who cannot yet read fluently can take part fully. Being able to describe what they see and answer 'how do you know?' matters more than reading.
