Earth & Space in K-2 is about noticing patterns you can actually see: the Sun rising and setting, the Moon changing shape over a month, stars appearing only at night, and the rocks, soil, sand and water that make up the ground under your feet. Sessions are spoken conversations where the learner describes what they have observed out of a window or in a picture, and then gets asked why it might happen. The aim at this age is careful observing, sorting, and describing patterns in words — not memorising planet facts or definitions.

- Describing the day/night pattern: the Sun appears to move across the sky, and it is the spinning Earth that causes sunrise and sunset
- Tracking how the Moon's shape changes over days and weeks, and noticing the Moon can sometimes be seen in daytime
- Sorting Earth materials — rock, pebble, sand, soil, water — by how they look and feel, and naming where each is found
- Naming land and water features from pictures and simple maps: mountain, hill, river, lake, ocean, island
- Observing how shadows change length and direction through the day and connecting that to where the Sun is
- Noticing slow and fast changes to land: a puddle drying, sand washing away in a stream, a rock staying put for years
Where learners get stuck
- Thinking the Sun goes out, hides, or 'goes to sleep' at night instead of the Earth turning
- From the ground the Sun really does look like it moves and disappears, and everyday phrases like 'the sun went down' reinforce it. Young children trust what they see over an explanation they cannot picture.
- Believing clouds cover the Moon to make crescents and half-moons
- Children have genuinely seen clouds hide part of the Moon, so it is a reasonable guess. Distinguishing a temporary cloud from the repeating monthly pattern takes several observations spread over time.
- Treating soil and sand as the same thing, or calling every small stone 'a rock' with no further description
- Both feel loose and grainy in the hand. Children need prompting to compare colour, smell, what sticks together when wet, and whether living things grow in it before the categories separate.
What a session looks like
A 15-25 minute spoken session. Evelyn opens with something the learner can look at or remember — 'what did the sky look like when you woke up?' — then builds on it with short questions, asking the child to describe shapes, colours and positions in their own words. There is often a small observation task to try later, such as checking the Moon two nights in a row or standing in the same spot to see where a shadow points. Parents can sit in; no worksheets or screen work are needed.
Helpful to know first
- Able to hold a back-and-forth spoken conversation and answer 'what did you see?' questions
- Knows basic position words: up, down, above, behind, near, far
- Can count to about ten and compare sizes (bigger, smaller, longer)
- No reading or writing required
Questions
- Does this teach the planets and the solar system?
- Only lightly. At K-2 the focus is on what a child can observe — Sun, Moon, stars, day and night, and Earth materials. Planet names come up if the learner asks, but they are not the goal, since ordering planets is memorisation rather than observation.
- My child keeps saying the Sun moves. Should I correct them?
- Say both things are true in different ways: it looks like the Sun moves, and what is really happening is that the Earth spins. Sessions return to this repeatedly with turning and shadow examples, because it usually takes many exposures before it sticks.
- Is any equipment or outdoor time needed?
- No, but it helps. A window, a sunny patch of pavement for shadows, and a jar of soil or a few stones from outside give the learner something concrete to describe. Everything can also be done from pictures and memory.
