SAT Math covers the two adaptive math modules of the digital SAT: 44 questions in 70 minutes, scored 200–800, split across Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. This topic is about the mathematics itself — setting up equations from wordy contexts, manipulating quadratics and exponentials, reading tables and scatterplots, and handling the roughly one quarter of questions that require you to type in your own answer. Work is one-on-one by voice, so you talk through your setup and reasoning out loud while writing on paper, and misread setups get caught before you spend three minutes solving the wrong equation.

What this covers

  • Linear equations, systems, and inequalities in context — including recognising when a system has no solution or infinitely many, and translating rate/cost/mixture wording into two equations
  • Advanced Math: quadratics in standard, vertex, and factored form and what each reveals; exponential growth and decay; radical and rational equations, including extraneous solutions
  • Problem-Solving and Data Analysis: percent change, ratios and unit rates, mean/median comparisons, reading scatterplots and lines of best fit, margin of error and sampling conclusions
  • Geometry and Trigonometry: circle equations and arc/sector relationships, similar triangles, right-triangle trig, and the SOHCAHTOA-to-radian transition
  • Student-produced response entry rules — fractions vs decimals, negative answers, when a range of values is accepted, and how to avoid rounding errors that cost a correct answer
  • Using the built-in Desmos calculator deliberately: graphing to find intersections and zeros, and knowing the question types where algebra by hand is faster

Where learners get stuck

Treating 'increased by 30%' and 'is 30% of' as the same operation, and compounding percent changes by adding them
Both phrasings attach the same number to the same noun, so students pattern-match on the percentage instead of the verb. Successive changes feel additive because nothing in the sentence signals multiplication.
Assuming any equation with x-squared has two real solutions, or that a 'no solution' system means the algebra was done wrong
Classroom quadratics are usually engineered to factor cleanly with two roots, so a discriminant of zero or a negative reads as an error. The SAT deliberately tests the parameter values that produce exactly one solution or none.
Graphing everything in Desmos, including problems that ask for an expression, a coefficient's meaning, or a value of an unknown constant
The calculator is available on every question, which suggests it should be used on every question. Interpretation questions and questions with two unknown letters often have no graph to draw, and time drains while students hunt for one.

What a session looks like

You bring a problem set, a practice test section, or a topic you want drilled. Evelyn asks you to read the question aloud and state your setup before you solve, then works through the algebra with you step by step, stopping when a sign, a distributed term, or an interpretation goes wrong. For questions with a figure or graph, you describe what you see — coordinates, labels, given angles — and reason from that description. Sessions typically mix a few timed problems with slower diagnostic work on whichever category is producing the most errors, and end with the specific rule or setup that caused the mistakes.

Helpful to know first

  • Algebra 1: solving linear equations and systems, slope-intercept form, factoring simple quadratics
  • Working knowledge of exponent rules and function notation, f(x)
  • Basic geometry: angle relationships, area and volume formulas, the Pythagorean theorem
  • Familiarity with the digital SAT's format and timing is helpful but can be covered separately

Questions

Is a calculator allowed on the whole digital SAT math section?
Yes. Both math modules permit a calculator, and Bluebook includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator. You may also bring your own approved model. There is no longer a no-calculator section, which changes which problems are worth graphing versus solving by hand.
How is SAT Math different from ACT Math?
SAT Math has 44 questions in 70 minutes with fewer, deeper geometry questions and a heavier emphasis on algebra, data interpretation, and interpreting the meaning of coefficients in context. ACT Math is 60 questions with a tighter time-per-question and broader coverage including logarithms, matrices, and more plane geometry.
What score should I aim for in SAT Math?
The math section is scored 200–800. A useful target depends on the schools on your list — check their published middle-50% ranges. For planning purposes, work backwards from a target to how many questions you can afford to miss, since the adaptive second module means difficulty depends on first-module performance.
Can voice tutoring work for math with graphs and diagrams?
For most SAT math work, yes — you read the question and describe the figure, then talk through the setup while writing on paper. It works well for catching setup errors, wording traps, and algebra slips. Problems that hinge entirely on visual estimation from an unlabelled figure are the hardest fit, and are relatively rare on this test.
