ACT Math gives you about a minute per question across the full high school sequence — pre-algebra, elementary and intermediate algebra, coordinate and plane geometry, and a handful of trigonometry items — with a calculator permitted throughout. The difficulty climbs roughly in order, so the skill being tested is as much triage and speed as it is mathematics. These sessions work on both: recognising question types on sight, choosing the fastest route (algebra, plugging in the answer choices, or estimating), and finishing the back half of the section with time to spare.

- Pacing and triage: reading a question, deciding within seconds whether to solve it, plug in answers, or skip and flag it, and rationing time across easier early questions to bank minutes for later ones
- Coordinate geometry drills — slope, midpoint, distance, circle equations in standard and general form, and reading transformations of parabolas straight off the equation
- Plane geometry that ACT reuses constantly: special right triangles, similar-triangle ratios, circle arcs and sectors, and volume/surface area of composite solids
- The intermediate algebra strand SAT does not test — logarithms, matrices, complex numbers, sequences, and function composition — usually one or two questions each
- SOHCAHTOA, the unit circle, the law of sines and cosines, and basic trig graph features (amplitude, period) as they appear in the last third of the section
- Answer-choice strategy: backsolving, substituting convenient numbers into variable-only answers, and using the five choices to eliminate before computing
- Word problems with rates, percent change, averages, probability and unit conversion, where translation errors cost more marks than arithmetic ones
Where learners get stuck
- Solving for the intermediate quantity and stopping there, because the ACT deliberately lists that value as a distractor
- Multi-step problems ask for x+3 or the perimeter after you have already found x or one side. The number you computed appears among the choices, so nothing feels wrong and there is no time pressure signal to re-check.
- Spending three or four minutes on a single hard geometry or trig question and running out of time on later questions that were easier
- In class, persistence on a hard problem is rewarded. On a 60-question section with an even mark per question, it is arithmetically the wrong trade, but students rarely practise abandoning a question they believe they can finish.
- Assuming diagrams are drawn to scale, or assuming they are not
- ACT figures are generally drawn to scale unless the question says otherwise, so estimating from the picture often eliminates three choices — but students who have been drilled on 'never trust the figure' from other tests refuse to use it, while others measure figures that are explicitly labelled not to scale.
- Treating log and matrix questions as unlearnable because they have not been covered in class yet
- These appear as a small, highly predictable set of question forms. Students in Algebra II mid-year often skip them on sight rather than learning the three or four patterns that actually show up.
What a session looks like
Sessions run by voice. Evelyn sets a short timed block of ACT-style questions, then you talk through your reasoning on the ones you missed or slowed down on — including where in the question you first went wrong, not just the correct method. Diagrams and equations are described aloud and can be shown on screen, and you are expected to have paper and your test calculator to hand so the work matches test conditions. Later sessions add full 60-question timed sections with a review of pacing splits: how many minutes you actually spent on questions 1–20 versus 41–60.
Helpful to know first
- Algebra I and Geometry completed, with Algebra II in progress or finished — trigonometry can be learned from scratch during prep
- Fluency with fractions, percentages and exponent rules without a calculator, since some questions are faster by hand
- A calculator you will actually take on test day (graphing calculators are permitted with restrictions; CAS models such as the TI-89 are not) and enough familiarity to use it without hunting through menus
- A recent practice section or official score report, so early sessions target the question types you are losing marks on rather than reviewing everything
Questions
- How is ACT Math different from SAT Math?
- The ACT section is longer and faster — roughly a minute per question versus closer to a minute and a half — with five answer choices instead of four and a calculator allowed the whole way through. Content-wise, ACT adds logarithms, matrices, complex numbers, sequences and more trigonometry, while the SAT goes deeper on data analysis and multi-part algebra modelling. The ACT rewards speed and recognition; the SAT rewards careful reading of longer setups.
- Has the ACT Math section changed length?
- ACT has been rolling out a shorter form with fewer math questions, less time, and four answer choices per question rather than five. Which version you sit depends on your test date and whether you test online or on paper. Sessions can be run to either timing — tell Evelyn which form you are registered for and the pacing drills adjust accordingly.
- Do I need to know trigonometry to do well?
- You can score respectably without it, since trig is a small share of the section, but the questions cluster at the end where the harder marks are. Right-triangle ratios, the law of sines and cosines, and identifying amplitude and period from a graph cover most of what appears.
- My child finishes the practice sections but gets the last ten questions wrong. What do we work on?
- Usually pacing, not content. If the first twenty questions took twenty-five minutes, the last ten were rushed regardless of ability. Sessions time each third of the section separately, then build the habit of flagging and moving on so the hardest questions get a fair attempt rather than the leftovers.
