GMAT Quant — the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GMAT Focus Edition — is 21 questions in 45 minutes, all Problem Solving, all multiple choice with five answer options, and no on-screen calculator. Data Sufficiency no longer appears here; it moved to the Data Insights section. Geometry was also removed. What remains is arithmetic, number properties, algebra and word problems, tested under about two minutes and ten seconds per question by a section-adaptive engine that pushes harder questions after correct answers. These sessions work on the reasoning shortcuts and arithmetic fluency that make that pace possible, not on re-teaching a full maths syllabus.

What this covers

  • Number properties under pressure: divisibility rules, prime factorisation, remainders, odd/even and positive/negative behaviour, factors and multiples
  • Fractions, decimals, percents and ratios — including percent change, successive percents, percent greater than vs percent of, and part-to-part vs part-to-whole ratios
  • Algebra: linear and quadratic equations, systems, inequalities, absolute value, exponents and roots, and simplifying before solving
  • Word problems in GMAT phrasing: rate/time/distance, combined work, mixtures, interest, profit and discount, age and overlapping-set problems
  • Statistics and counting: mean, median, mode, range, weighted averages, standard deviation conceptually, plus permutations, combinations and basic probability
  • Strategy under a 2:09 average: picking smart numbers, backsolving from the answer choices, estimating, and recognising when full algebra is the slower path

Where learners get stuck

Assuming an unknown is a positive integer
Most practice arithmetic uses whole numbers, so learners test x = 2 and stop. GMAT questions are built around the cases people skip — zero, negatives, and fractions between 0 and 1, where squaring makes a number smaller and multiplying both sides of an inequality flips the sign.
Averaging averages instead of weighting them
A question gives an average for two groups of different sizes and the intuitive move is to add and halve. The idea that the combined average sits nearer the larger group has to be worked through with actual totals before it becomes automatic.
Solving every question the algebra-class way
Years of school maths reward setting up variables and solving cleanly. On a five-option multiple-choice test, testing an answer choice or plugging in 100 for a percent problem is often twice as fast, and learners resist it because it feels like cheating rather than a method.

What a session looks like

Sessions run by voice. Evelyn gives you a problem and asks how you would start before you calculate anything, since the choice of approach is what usually decides whether the question fits in two minutes. You talk through the setup out loud; Evelyn interrupts when a step is longer than it needs to be and shows the shorter route. Work can be timed to build pace, or untimed when a topic is new. You can also bring questions you missed in a practice test and explain your original reasoning, which is usually where the specific error shows up. Nothing needs to be typed or shared on screen — you read the problem, Evelyn works from what you say.

Helpful to know first

  • Comfortable with secondary-school arithmetic and algebra: fractions, exponents, factoring, solving linear and quadratic equations
  • Able to do multi-step arithmetic by hand, since no calculator is available in this section
  • A rough sense of your current position — a practice test score, or at least which topics feel slow
  • Access to official GMAT practice questions is useful, though not required to start

Questions

Is Data Sufficiency still on the GMAT Quant section?
No. In the GMAT Focus Edition, Quantitative Reasoning is entirely Problem Solving. Data Sufficiency questions still appear on the exam, but inside the Data Insights section alongside table analysis, graphics interpretation, multi-source reasoning and two-part analysis.
Is geometry tested on GMAT Quant?
Not in the Focus Edition. Triangles, circles, coordinate geometry and solids were removed. Time that would have gone to geometry is better spent on number properties, rates and percent problems, which appear far more often.
Can I use a calculator?
Not in Quantitative Reasoning. An on-screen calculator is provided only for Data Insights. Part of the preparation is rebuilding mental arithmetic — common fraction-to-percent conversions, squares to 20, and knowing when to estimate rather than compute exactly.
How long does it take to raise a Quant score?
That depends on the starting point and the cause of the lost points. Errors from shaky number properties take longer to fix than errors from pacing or careless arithmetic. A diagnostic sorting your misses into content gaps, method choices and timing will tell you more than any general timeline.
