Intro Psychology at the college level moves fast: in one term you cover research design, neuroscience, learning, memory, development, personality, social behaviour, and psychopathology, and most of the exam pressure comes from applying terms to short scenarios rather than reciting definitions. Where learners get stuck
- Treating negative reinforcement as a synonym for punishment
- In everyday English 'negative' means bad, so students hear 'negative reinforcement' as something aversive. The technical meaning is removal of a stimulus to increase behaviour, and exam items are built specifically to catch this. Evelyn drills the two-by-two grid with scenarios until students identify the change (add/remove) and the effect (increase/decrease) separately.
- Saying a correlational study 'proves' one variable causes the other, or that a non-significant result proves no effect
- Textbooks state the correlation-causation rule early, then students meet dozens of correlational findings in later chapters phrased causally by the media. Practising the third-variable and reverse-causation alternatives on specific studies works better than repeating the slogan.
- Confusing classical and operant conditioning when the scenario involves a voluntary-looking behaviour
- The textbook examples (salivating dogs, lever-pressing rats) are cleanly separated, but real scenarios blend them. The reliable test is whether the behaviour is elicited by a stimulus that came before it or emitted and then followed by a consequence — Evelyn has students identify the ordering before naming the process.
What a session looks like
A typical session runs 25-50 minutes by voice. You bring a lecture topic, a problem set, or a returned exam; Evelyn asks you to explain a concept in your own words, then works through applied scenarios — labelling variables in a described study, classifying a conditioning example, or reasoning through a symptom vignette. She interrupts when a definition is being used loosely, which is where most lost exam points come from. Sessions can also be spent planning or revising an APA-format research summary or reaction paper.

- The vocabulary load is heavy — several hundred terms — but exams usually test application, giving a short scenario and asking which concept it illustrates. Students who only memorise definitions tend to lose marks on those items. Sessions focus on classifying unfamiliar scenarios rather than reciting the glossary.
- Do I need to understand statistics to pass intro psych?
- You need conceptual statistics: what a correlation coefficient means, why random assignment matters, what a significant result licenses you to claim, and the difference between describing a sample and inferring about a population. Most intro courses require little calculation beyond means and standard deviations.
