High school psychology at the 11-12 level asks you to do two things at once: learn a large vocabulary of terms and theories, and apply them to unfamiliar situations rather than just define them. This tutoring covers the standard course sequence — research methods and statistics, biological bases of behaviour, sensation and perception, learning, memory and cognition, development, personality, psychological disorders and treatment, and social psychology. Sessions are spoken one-on-one with an AI tutor, which suits a subject where the main task is explaining a concept out loud and then applying it to a scenario you haven't seen before.

Where learners get stuck
- Treating negative reinforcement as a synonym for punishment
- In everyday speech 'negative' means bad, so students hear 'negative reinforcement' as something unpleasant being done to a person. In the operant framework 'negative' only means something is removed, and 'reinforcement' always means the behaviour becomes more likely. Sorting scenarios by two separate questions — added or removed, more likely or less likely — fixes this faster than memorising four definitions.
- Reading a strong negative correlation as a weak relationship
- The minus sign gets interpreted as 'less' rather than as direction. Students then rank -0.80 as weaker than +0.40. Practice reading the sign and the magnitude as two independent pieces of information, alongside scatterplots that look nothing like the tidy examples in the textbook.
- Blurring Piaget, Erikson and Kohlberg into one list of stages
- All three are taught in the same unit, all use numbered stages tied to age, and revision notes often present them as parallel tables. The distinction is what each theorist was tracking — cognitive operations, social identity conflicts, or moral reasoning — so questions get answered with a plausible-sounding stage from the wrong theory.
- Defining a term instead of applying it on free-response questions
- Definitions are what gets rewarded on multiple choice and in class quizzes, so the habit carries over. Applied prompts require the term to be used to explain something happening to a named person in the scenario; a correct textbook definition with no link to the scenario typically earns nothing.
What a session looks like
You talk through material out loud with the tutor. A typical session might start with the tutor giving you a short research scenario and asking you to name the independent variable, identify a confound, and say why the researchers used random assignment. From there you might work through conditioning scenarios one at a time, explaining your reasoning as you go, or draft a free-response paragraph aloud and get feedback on whether you actually applied the term or only defined it. The tutor asks follow-up questions when an answer is vague, and will hand back the same concept in a new scenario later in the session to check it held.
Helpful to know first
- No prior psychology coursework needed — the course starts from the definition of behaviour and mental processes
- Comfort reading graphs, especially scatterplots and bar charts, and working with percentages
- Basic biology helps for the neuroscience unit: cells, chemical signalling, and the idea of a nervous system, though these are re-taught as needed
- Ability to write a structured paragraph, since much of the assessment is short applied writing rather than multiple choice
Questions
- How is high school psychology different from the sociology course?
- Psychology explains behaviour at the level of the individual — neurons, memory processes, personality traits, how one person perceives a situation. Sociology works at the level of groups, institutions and social structures. They overlap in the social psychology unit, but psychology approaches conformity or obedience by asking what is happening inside the person, and uses experimental methods more heavily.
- Is psychology a hard science course or an easy elective?
- The content load is large and the research methods and statistics units are genuinely quantitative. Students who expect only opinions and case studies are usually surprised by the questions on experimental design, correlation coefficients and significance. The difficulty is less in the maths than in the volume of precise terminology that has to be applied, not just recalled.
- Can you help with the free-response section of a college-level psychology exam?
- Yes. Sessions can focus on applied writing — reading a scenario, identifying which concept each prompt is asking for, and producing a sentence that connects the term to the specific person and situation described. The tutor is not affiliated with any exam board and does not have access to live exam materials.
- My child keeps mixing up classical and operant conditioning. Can that be fixed quickly?
- Usually yes, because it's a sorting problem rather than a knowledge gap. The tutor works through a run of scenarios and asks the same diagnostic question each time — is the learner responding automatically to a signal, or acting because of a consequence — until the sort becomes automatic. This typically takes part of one or two sessions plus spaced re-checks.
