High school biology at the 9th–10th grade level covers the standard first-year sequence: cell structure and transport, photosynthesis and cellular respiration, DNA replication and protein synthesis, Mendelian and molecular genetics, evolution and natural selection, and ecosystem dynamics. Sessions stay on the biology side of the line: chemical bonding and reaction stoichiometry belong to chemistry, and organ-system detail belongs to anatomy and physiology.

Where learners get stuck
- Believing organisms evolve traits because they need them, or that individuals evolve during their lifetime
- Everyday language ('giraffes stretched their necks', 'bacteria became resistant to survive') encodes purpose into evolution. Students carry that phrasing into answers and lose marks even when they understand selection. The fix is rewording every explanation to start from variation that already existed in the population.
- Treating mitosis and meiosis as the same process with different names, and mixing up chromosome numbers at each stage
- Both are taught as diagrams of similar-looking phases in quick succession. Students memorise phase names without tracking the actual purpose — one produces identical body cells, the other produces gametes with half the chromosomes and shuffled alleles. Counting chromosomes out loud at each step usually exposes the gap.
- Thinking plants do photosynthesis and animals do respiration, so plants don't respire
- The two processes are taught in separate chapters, often with a plant on one page and an animal on the other. Students then can't explain why a plant in the dark still uses oxygen, or why respiration happens in plant mitochondria too.
What a session looks like
A session is a spoken back-and-forth. Evelyn asks you to explain a process in your own words — how a mutation changes a protein, or why a red blood cell bursts in distilled water — then follows the reasoning to find where it breaks down. Genetics problems get worked step by step aloud, with the AI asking for the parent genotypes before the offspring ratios. Diagram-heavy material is handled by having you describe what a labelled structure does, since the goal is the causal chain, not the label itself. You can bring a specific homework question, a topic from a class test, or a chapter you're revising.

- Middle school life science: cells as the basic unit of life, the idea that traits are inherited, and basic food chains
- Comfort with fractions, percentages, and simple ratios for genetics and population problems
- Basic chemistry vocabulary — atom, molecule, element, pH — at the level of knowing what water and glucose are made of

- Can it help with a specific biology homework question, like a dihybrid cross?
- Yes. You can read out or describe the problem and work through it aloud. Evelyn will ask you to set up the gametes and the grid rather than reading out the answer, and will check each step as you go.
- How does voice tutoring work for biology when there are so many diagrams?
- Diagram content is handled by description and verbal reasoning — explaining what happens at each stage of respiration, or narrating the path of a nerve signal or a molecule. You keep your textbook or worksheet open in front of you and Evelyn works from what you describe.
- My child can recite definitions but freezes on exam questions that ask them to explain or predict. Does this help?
- That gap is common in biology because the vocabulary load is high. Sessions push toward explanation questions — why this result, what would happen if — which is what most exam mark schemes reward.
