Ecosystems in grades 3-5 is where students stop looking at single organisms and start tracing the connections between them. Learners build food chains and food webs, sort living things into producers, consumers and decomposers, and explain how energy from sunlight moves through a pond, forest, desert or backyard. They also look at what happens when one part changes: a drought, a new species arriving, or a predator disappearing. Evelyn Tutor works through these ideas by talking them out loud, asking the learner to trace energy from the sun to a hawk and to predict what happens when a link is removed.

Where learners get stuck

Drawing food chain arrows backwards, from the eater to the food
Children read the chain as a sentence: 'the fox eats the rabbit,' so the arrow points from fox to rabbit. The convention is the opposite because the arrow tracks energy, and energy travels from the rabbit into the fox. Learners need to say the arrow out loud as 'gives energy to' several times before it sticks.
Believing plants get their food from the soil
Watering and fertilising plants makes soil look like the food source, and the word 'feeding' is used for both. Students then can't explain why plants count as producers. Reframing it as plants making their own food using light, with soil supplying water and minerals, is what fixes the food web logic.
Treating decomposers as unimportant, or leaving them off the web entirely
Mushrooms, worms and bacteria aren't eaten by anything obvious, so they seem like a dead end. Students also don't picture nutrients returning to the soil. Without decomposers the web has no way to recycle matter, and questions about 'what happens to the dead leaves' become unanswerable.
Assuming removing a predator is always good for the ecosystem
Predators read as villains in stories and cartoons. Learners predict that removing wolves means happy deer, and miss the overgrazing that follows. Working through one concrete two-step chain of consequences usually shifts this.

What a session looks like

A session usually starts with one habitat the learner picks or has been assigned in class, and builds the food web for it out loud, organism by organism. Evelyn asks the learner to say which arrow goes where and why, and to place decomposers before the web is finished. Then comes a change: a hard winter, a new species, a river drying up. The learner predicts two or three steps of consequences and explains the reasoning. Sessions can also be shaped around a specific worksheet, diagram or unit vocabulary list the student brings.

Questions

What's the difference between a habitat and an ecosystem?
A habitat is the place a particular organism lives. An ecosystem is all the living things in an area plus the non-living parts, such as water, soil, sunlight and air, and the interactions between them. Grade 3-5 questions often use both words, so Evelyn checks the learner can distinguish them with examples.
How do I explain food webs to my child if I'm shaky on it myself?
You don't need to. Sessions are between the learner and the tutor, spoken aloud. If it helps, ask your child afterwards to explain one food chain to you and to say which way the arrows point and why.
My child mixes up producers and consumers. Is that normal at this age?
Yes, and it usually traces back to the idea that plants get food from soil. Evelyn works on why plants count as food-makers first, because the producer/consumer sort falls into place once that idea is settled.
Does this cover the ecosystem vocabulary on our state science test?
