Shapes and patterns is where young children start doing real geometry: naming a shape by counting its sides and corners rather than by how it looks at a glance, telling flat shapes from solid ones, and spotting the part of a pattern that repeats. This topic runs alongside counting and arithmetic in K-2 but uses a different kind of thinking - describing, sorting, predicting what comes next - and it is the foundation for fractions (equal shares) and later geometry vocabulary.

Where learners get stuck
- A rotated square becomes a "diamond" and a triangle balanced on its point stops being a triangle
- Children learn shapes from picture books and worksheets where every triangle sits flat on its base. They memorise the picture, not the rule, so any tilt makes the shape unrecognisable until they are taught to count sides and corners instead.
- Mixing up flat and solid names - calling a ball a circle, a box a square, a can a circle
- The 2D words are learned first and used constantly at home, so they get applied to any object with a roughly similar outline. It takes deliberate practice comparing a drawn circle with a real sphere before the distinction sticks.
- Extending a pattern by copying the last two or three items rather than the repeating core
- With red-blue-blue-red-blue-blue, a child may see the tail end and continue "red, blue" from memory. They are pattern-matching visually without having identified the chunk that repeats, which shows up immediately when the pattern gets longer or uses three elements.
- Calling any two pieces "halves", even when one is clearly bigger
- In everyday speech "half" often just means "a piece", so the requirement that the parts be equal has to be made explicit and tested with folding and comparing.
What a session looks like
Sessions are spoken conversations. Evelyn asks the learner to describe a shape in words - how many sides, how many corners, are the sides the same length - and to hunt for shapes and solids in the room they are sitting in. Patterns are done out loud and with the body: clapping, stamping, saying colour or word sequences, and predicting the next few terms. The tutor asks the child to explain the rule, not just give the answer, and adjusts the pattern length and number of elements based on what they get right. Paper and a pencil, or a handful of blocks, coins or buttons, make the shape-building parts easier but are not required.

Questions
- How can shapes be taught over voice with no pictures?
- The work is verbal by design: counting sides and corners aloud, describing shapes so the tutor can guess them, finding examples in the room, and clapping or saying patterns. Parents who want a visual element can put out paper, blocks or household objects, and the tutor will give instructions for building with them.
- Is a kindergartener too young for this?
- Sessions are short and conversational, and the tutor starts with basic shape naming and two-element AB patterns, moving on only when the child is confident. Younger children usually need an adult nearby for the first few sessions.
- My child knows all the shape names already - is there anything left to learn?
- Naming is the starting point. The next steps are describing shapes by their attributes, recognising them when rotated or stretched, separating flat shapes from solids, combining shapes to make new ones, and splitting them into equal parts - all of which are part of K-2 geometry.
- Why do schools spend so much time on patterns?
- Finding and describing a repeating rule is early algebraic thinking. Children who can state the rule for a pattern are better placed for skip counting, even and odd numbers, and later work with sequences and functions.
